cosmic rays,
rays of very short wavelengths and very great penetration that come to the earth from beyond the earth's atmosphere, especially from the sun and from interstellar space. Cosmic rays consist of high-energy particles which collide with the atomic nuclei of the earth's atmosphere, producing secondary particles, such as the mesons observed at ground level. »

Some studies indicate that cosmic rays may have energies up to 30 billion electron volts in space, much larger than the radiation from the biggest existing atom smasher (Wall Street Journal).
